Alex is a bass player, composer and label owner based out of Montreal.
Born October 30th 1982 in Montreal, Canada, Alex grew up with his father’s Frank Sinatra records and his mother’s Beatles cassette tapes. In grade school he discovered 90’s top 40, punk rock and hip hop. During his high school years he picked up his mother’s old guitar and began learning songs by ear and quickly progressed to writing his own. He began booking his own concerts in small punk venues in Montreal while still in high school and that “Do it Yourself” approach remains a huge part of his aesthetic. He was accepted as a music major at the age of 19, not being able to read a single note of music. After years of hard work, Alex refined his musical abilities as well as discovering jazz, classical and electronic music in the process.
Alex co-founded Parc X trio, one of Canada’s premier young jazz groups. Parc X Trio have released 7 official recordings, the latest of which, Dream, is released through Challenge Records International. They have toured across Canada, Mexico, the USA and Europe and maintain a busy touring schedule. Parc X Trio have won many awards and distinctions including the Grand Prize for Jazz by the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal in 2010.
Alex also produces electronic music under the alias Peetry. His sample-based composition “Lionnel-Grouxl Dub” was a finalist for MUTEK‘s “Connect the Montreal Musical Dots” contest in May 2013.
Alex co-founded Multiple Chord Music (MCM), an independent Montreal record label that promotes local talent, mostly in the jazz vein.
He also composes music for media. Alex is also an experienced educator who helps students develop and refine their musical instincts and technique.
Outside of his own endeavors, Alex remains quite active as a sideman in the pop, jazz and classical fields and is known for his work ethic, easy going personality and stylistic versatility. He has had the pleasure of performing with artists such as Rafael Zaldivar, Samuel Blais, Rémi Bolduc, John Roney, Jim Doxas, Jacques Kuba Séguin, Erik Hove, Andy King, Klo Pelgag, Karma Atchykah and Aliocha .
